Dancing Corn

March is Craft Month. Last year we did our recycling crafts with a few other bloggers and this month we are doing a whole bunch of fun activities. But this month we are focusing on STEAM! Candice has explained over at Moms Artelier why we decided to go this theme!

This week we are all doing a science experiment. We love a bit of a science experiment and while trying to decide what we wanted to do, we went through a few failed experiments. Failed experiments are still science and we had lots of fun trying them out!

I wanted to find an Autumn themed experiment because we are talking about the new season in school at the moment. When I saw this one I knew we had to try it out. I mean, dancing corn! Sounds fun, right? And it was!!

What do you need?

Vinegar

Bicarb (baking soda)

Corn Kernels

Glass Jar

How do you make it happen?

Pour about a cup of corn kernels into a glass jar.

Cover with two cups of vinegar

Slowly pour about 1/4 cup bicarb into the vinegar. We did it too quickly, it doesn’t effect the experiment but does make a bigger mess. This reaction is always so much fun so let the kids enjoy the mess if it does bubble over.

Once the main fizz has calmed down you will see the corn kernels dancing around. The corn actually moves to the top of the water, which is also very cool to watch.

We sat watching them bounce up and down for ages, we stirred it up a few times and they started dancing again.

It really is such a fun interactive experiment perfect for kids of all ages.
