What are your Just In Case moments

Motherhood seems to be a collection of “just in case” moments. Some parents have more “stuff” together than others and are better at planning for the “just in case” moments. I am not some parents. I am more the learn from my mistakes parent. This means I have found myself in many of these moments, unprepared. I am learning though, 15 years of parenting and 4 kids later, you would think so right?

What are these just in case moments I am talking about? Well they are those moments that are out of the ordinary – you know things like always having enough petrol, saving for a rainy day – basically they involve planning for as many eventualities as you can.

Here are some of my just in case moments.

I am always prepared for vomit! If we travel anywhere further than an hour, I plan for vomit in the car. I have a towel, plastic bag and change of clothes for Jack and Emma. My kids are vomiters, we learnt this the hard way. It was not a fun lesson so we do not want to ever experience it again.

Pack a snack! Always pack a snack! It doesn’t matter where you are going or how long you will be there – PACK A SNACK!#justincase|HarassedMom

Keep a loaf of bread in the freezer.

Always have change for parking!! I hardly carry cash and have to draw money purely for a R5 parking ticket too often. I now actively keep change in my purse and if I know I am going to exceed the free parking I make sure I have more than enough to cover it.

Buy the coffee when it is on special. No explanation needed really!

Toilet visits before you leave are not optional. Even if they fight you or are 15 years old -toilet visits are not optional!

Make sure you always have some form of pain medication in the house. Don’t wait to buy a new bottle when the old one finishes.

Keep a spare lipstick in your car together with a pair of shoes. On those rare occasions when my car gets cleaned and all of these are removed, I always regret it. Every single time!

  1. Lol, “always prepared for vomit.” I think I sort of am always prepared for vomit, but just because spare clothes and extra wipes/towels etc are in my diaper bag anyway. I never thought of it so specifically before. Ha!

  2. I was babysitting my cousins after school in high school, and on the drive home with the baby in her carseat in the back, she threw up.

    I had nothing.

It was awful… so now I carry a vomit kit in the car: towel, paper towel roll, extra baby wipes, and a change of clothes for each of the kids.

  3. Haha yes to the extra loaf of bread in the freezer! Always a handy thing to have ready. Another of my “just in case”s is to keep a portable charger with me if I’m out for a long day! Just in case my phone decides to run out of battery….
