Today in my exam I over heard the two young girls next to me talking.
They were obviously catching up on whats been happening in each others lives the last few months. And it reminded me so much of conversations I had PRE-KIDS!
Girl 1 mentioned her friends were now 5 weeks pregnant. She said she was happy for them but “REALLY! Kids ruin your life”.
Girl 2 then went on to share her au pairing experience. It seems that she has been au pairing since the begining of the year. She started with a family in the states but came back after a month – apparently the child was a brat. She then made a rather generalised statement that made me chuckle – according to her “all children who have au pairs are brats and I know because I look after them”
Her story didnt end there. Her job after the failed US trip was with a family who had a son in Gr 1. She arrives to fetch the kid and he tells her that his friend is coming home with him. She asks him is he sure – he says yes. Half way out the gate she thinks to phone the mom. The mom confirms it is a story and the child is not to go home with them! She drives back – leaves her kid in the car while she takes this kid back to the after care. She TELLS the kid to remain in the car.
What does he do – disappears. Takes them 3 hours to find him and the mother then fires her. Girl 2 was indignant “It was NOT my fault. What must I do if her child is a brat and wont listen”
I had to giggle. It is such a typical view point of a child fresh out of school with no kids. Why she kept on doing it I have no idea.
But one day when she has kids of her own she will understand. She will understand just how hard it is and that you NEVER leave a

Your post got cut off – but I agree, you NEVER leave a kid alone in a car like that. And yes, these girls might just learn how great parenting can be, once they grow up a bit and have their own kids.
I wonder if she’ll remember this conversation when she has kids one day?
It’s a learning curve, that’s for sure.
Hehe, I can imagine how she was telling that story
Yes I love to hear non-mothers talk about how their kids will never do that shit. Cracks me up. I just smile and shake my head.
It’s amazing how having kids can really wake you up, and change your perspective on oh so many things…. 🙂
WOW! See? We all speak and act based on what we know at the time. We probably sounded just like this at some point in our lives.
And yeah, I would have fired her too. After I wrung her neck!!!
Oh well, it made for a good post.
