Lets save some money

I read this blog post today and of course it hit home.

Times are tough right now – with everyone.

Grocery’s are going up, petrol is going up, school fees are going up, water and lights are going up and yet salaries remain as they are.

So I thought we could all throw together some money saving tips to help each other save a few pennies.

Right now groceries is our major spend that we can control – we can’t really control school fees and petrol etc.

  • So we have a meal plan each month and we make a list of groceries and buy only the stuff on the list. I add in kids lunches and everything. It does mean there are little to no midnight snacks though.
  • I shop only at Pick n Pay so I can earn Smart Shopper points, Vitality points and the double smart shopper points with Vitality.
  • If I can’t get what I need at PnP I shop at either Dischem – for eBucks and points or Clicks for Vitality and clicks club points.
  • Now that its cooler we are eating lots of soups – they are cheap and go far.
  • I have started making muffins for the kids – it actually works out cheaper that adding in Mini Cheddars or biscuits and they actually eat them.
  • We buy all our fresh veg from the Farmers Market – the food is sometimes more than half the price of the shops.

What are you doing to save money?

  1. where is the farmers market Lau?
We have Jasmyn house here, but I find their packs are just far too big for us and half the veg ends up in the worm farm.

We’re driving less, only go out when we have to, it’s hectic 🙁
    We don’t buy crap.
I’ve started using the slow cooker, I prepare meals for the week on Monday, put in ziplock bags and freeze, it’s easy, its yummy.
We also don’t get take out much, only special occasions.

    Tough times.

  2. Love these posts….I can pick up some good tips.
One of the other things I do is not limit myself to PnP…I found that their prices arent always the cheapest (even with the saver). And also they have far too many choices…i tend to go overboard.
I have started buying some staple(not fresh) food at Checkers…Alot of the Checkers no name brands are good quality and alot cheaper. Also, I found that the Spar Branch of long life milk is often on special and cheaper than everyone. Fortunately for me I have a PnP, Checkers, Spar and W/W within walking distance of my house…so to shop around is not going to cost me…

  3. I haven’t had those Pnp points work for me and lately I have looked further. I buy some non-perishables at Checkers or Shoprite. I have realised that pnp can be quite expensive. We also do veg from the market. I meal plan and buy ONLY what I need. There are no luxuries in the trolley – I actually don’t even buy wine anymore unless I REALLY feel for it.
We don’t go out much except to places where one doesn’t need to spend money. When my DH and I go out we do groupon dinners/lunches/breakfasts.
My DH and I are currently working out ways to save petrol and it looks like we are going to downgrade both our vehicles. Will post more on this next week sometime.

  4. This post really got me thinking.. we need to cut back, times are tough! Will be thinking of ways to make my Rands stretch longer! xx
