The Importance of Hair Conditioner

There are six people in this house. I birthed 4 of them, which means we do share some DNA. You would never say so just by looking at our hair! All 6 of us have completely different hair – we have curly, dry, very fine, thick, coarse, wavy. Not only is our hair type completely different, but it is also all different colours. As you can imagine, this makes finding a shampoo that works for everyone is impossible. The one thing, however, that we can agree on is that we all need a good conditioner. For a while all Kiara used was conditioner, it made a huge difference in the quality of hair.

Benefits of Hair Conditioner?

Hair conditioner is a product designed to improve the texture, manageability, and overall health of your hair.

It’s typically used after shampooing and provides several benefits:

Hydration: Conditioners hydrate your hair, replenishing moisture lost during shampooing. This is crucial because dry hair is more prone to breakage and frizz.

Detangling: Conditioners make combing and styling easier by smoothing the hair cuticle and reducing knots and tangles. If you have little ones then you know the power of conditioner. Kiara has tiny curls, brushing it when she was younger was a nightmare, we went through so much conditioner.

Repair: They repair damaged hair by sealing split ends and minimising further damage. Even if you don’t use a hairdryer on your hair or colour it, it does still get damaged.

Enhanced Shine: Conditioners add shine and lustre to your hair, making them look healthier and more vibrant.

 

Why Different Types of Hair Need Conditioners

Different hair types have varying needs, and using the right conditioner is essential for maintaining healthy hair.

Fine Hair:

  • Fine hair tends to be more delicate and prone to oiliness. Look for lightweight, volumizing conditioners that won’t weigh down your strands.
  • Avoid heavy, oil-based conditioners that might make your hair greasy.
  • Jack and I have fine hair and we definitely can’t add too much of anything otherwise our hair does get so oily.

Thick or Coarse Hair:

  • Thick or coarse hair benefits from rich, moisturising conditioners. These help soften and tame unruly strands.
  • Ingredients like shea butter, argan oil, and keratin work well for this hair type.
  • Emma has thick hair, it gets dry pretty, and she gets split ends pretty quickly. Argan oil works well on her hair.

Curly or Wavy Hair:

  • Curly and wavy hair tends to be dry and frizz prone. Opt for hydrating conditioners that define curls and reduce frizz.
  • Look for products with glycerine, coconut oil, or aloe vera.
  • Kiara has tiny curls and has kept her hair long for years. It has also taken her a while to figure out how to manage it. Argan oil also works well for her to keep her hair hydrated.

Colour-Treated Hair:

  • Colour-treated hair needs extra care. Use colour-safe conditioners that protect your hair colour and prevent fading.
  • Ingredients like UV filters and antioxidants are beneficial.

Damaged or Chemically Treated Hair:

  • If your hair is damaged from heat styling, chemical treatments, or environmental factors, choose repairing conditioners.
  • These contain proteins (like keratin) and amino acids to strengthen and restore your hair.

How to Choose the Right Conditioner

Read Labels: Look for conditioners free from sulphates, parabens, and silicones. These ingredients can weigh down your hair and cause buildup. I love be.bare, their shampoo and conditioner bars work well and they last.

Consider Your Hair Type: As mentioned earlier, select a conditioner based on your hair type and specific needs.

Trial and Error: Don’t be afraid to try different brands and formulas. Everyone’s hair reacts differently, so find what works best for you. Hey Gorgeous is another natural range that I would recommend if you are in the Trial and Error stage.

Frequency: Use conditioner every time you shampoo, unless you have very fine hair. In that case, consider using it every other wash.

  1. I tend to use a coconut conditioner as I find it really makes my hair feel soft and it is great at detangling. I have been trying out a few new ones recently, I also love the Aussie brand ones, they really make my hair feel great.
