I find the school run to be the most frustrating part of my life, one of the reasons for our decision to home school (not a major factor but it was definitely on the pros side when we drew up our list). It is such a waste of time, the up and down, the waiting, it just takes more time than I feel it should. If it is at all possible my advice is to outsource this but if not then make the most of this time.
If you find yourself waiting in school parking lots for kids to come out, get your calls in. I find phone calls incredibly distracting so I try to get them done at the same time, if possible. This applies to replying to whatsapps as well. I belong to a few groups, some of them are really busy and I don’t have the time in the day to always check them so I take the this time to read through the important groups and reply if necessary.
Plan plan plan. This is a great time to plan the rest of your week, your meals or anything else you feel needs a little extra planning. I use the notepad on my phone to make lists of things I need to buy or do.
Get in your one-2-one time with your kids. Say what? I use the time in the car to catch up with the kids. I fetch Jack first which means we are alone in the car for a while, perfect time to catch up and chat without interruptions. It is where Cameron and I do the most talking and one of the main reasons (I think) why my kids talk to me about as much as they do. It is also the perfect time to plan their schedules. They are just from school so know what is happening for the week and we can check in with each other and plan what needs to happen.
Grab groceries. You are already in the car so stop in before or after getting the kids to grab whatever groceries you may need. This really is one of my ninja skills. I can run in and out of the store with everything I need in 10 minutes (seriously I have timed it :-p). The best time for me to do this is on the way to fetch Cameron at about 17h30 because by then Checkers have all their veggies on their 50% off already and the shops are pretty quiet and everyone just wants to get in and out quickly.
Earlier in this series I shared some time management tips and in that post I mentioned how time is the most valuable thing for moms working from home. I want to spend the evenings with my family so I really don’t want to be distracted by work during that time which is why I try to get everything I need to done before dinner. The only way I can do that is to use my time wisely and get the most out of every minute.
