Exams and 300 words a minute!

Kiara’s SS/NS teacher is slowly restoring my faith in teachers. Kiara passed a test this week – this is huge for us and the teacher knows this. She gave her a sticker and a lovely comment in her book as well as mentioning she is doing well in class. Kiara was walking on sunshine yesterday. We needed this a week before exams just to get her confidence up a little. I mentioned to Debby yesterday that I was considering keeping the kids at home today to study because we are just not where I think we should be. There is A LOT of work to cover. I think it is too much (140 pages of NS, 94 pages of English etc) but there really is no point moaning. It is what it is and we have to get through it. So our weekend will be spent studying. Betterroomview Jack is not sleeping properly and I am not sure what to do. He doesn’t actually wake up – he just moans/cries for ages. We leave him and sometimes we get lucky and he will stop but more often than not one of us has to get up and either move him back under the blankets or give him his bottle. It is getting very tiring. Our Moms and Tots teacher told us that by 2 years old kids now around 300 words. I was rather sceptical but let me tell you Jack speaks 300 different words a minute at the moment. Sometimes we have no clue where he learnt them. Driving in the car he goes “car, bike, Cameron, Kiara, dad at work, Debby sick, moon, light, bottle, phone……” and so it goes on, whenever he sees something he knows he says it. It is very cute. It really is amazing how they just take everything in. sign What are you up to this weekend? Who else is studying?

  1. Stunning photos Laura.

Kids are amazing when they are that small they just absorb everything like a sponge. Hope he sleeps again soon.

  2. I was thinking about Kiara and her studies yesterday, and even if she doesn’t do brilliantly, you’re teaching her that learning for exams is just as important as the exam itself. Putting in the effort, instead of playing and hoping the exams will go away, will go a long way in teaching her the life lessons she needs later in life. Things don’t drop in your lap. You have to work for them, and sometimes you have to work really, really hard. Well done Laura!

  3. The exams sound really hectic. I’m very glad we are not there yet.

My youngest, Arno,(who turns 2 next week Tuesday) is exactly like that. He doesn’t cry, he moans, and we also lie in bed listening to it hoping it will stop. Then after a while, or if he starts crying I put the blankets over him, and sometimes he would ask for milk. I’m trying now that if he asks for milk before 5 I say no. And I don’t think he knows 300 words, but any word that you say to him he’ll repeat correctly. And he also loves repeating the family over and over ‘Mamma, Pappa, sussie Drea, Arno’

Oh, and I had a good laugh the other day. With his sister I usually count when she doesn’t want to do something. 1…2…3 and then I say I’m on my way then she does what she was suppose to do. I don’t normally get to 3 though, but earlier the week I started counting 1..2 and Arno shouted THREEEEEE

  4. Although the exams are not here yet, we are studying every afternoon/evening. It’s times like these which I really do respect my parents so much for getting us through school.

  5. I blogged about the speaking thing the other day, Tori just doesnt seem to be saying enough but then will pop out, “come Mama, bath time”

Her sleeping is horrendous as well! she went from a “put in bed and falls asleep” toddler to one that wants mama to lie with her until she nods off and then wake repeatedly through the night.

Exams are frightening me. Josh starts next year, please can you do a blog on how to study with your children, give us “virgin” moms a few tips and handy hints?

  6. There is studying happening in this house as I type this. My nerves are shattered. Well done to Kiara. I know how much that means. To her AND to you. xx

  7. I really admire your tenacity in helping your kids study, I’m probably going to lose my marbles when I get there.
All the best for the exams!
