Jack is five (and a half to be exact), the change over the last year has been amazing. He has literally transformed into a little boy with his own ideas, thoughts and questions about the world around him, SO many questions. I had forgotten how quickly they change at this age.
He did Grade R last year so they learnt the basics of reading and writing. Watching your child learn to read has go to be one of the most amazing things to watch. He came home one day and was able to use letters to make a whole host of words – cat, mat, mop, hop etc. It feels like it happens over night, you are driving, minding their own business and suddenly they recognise a word or are able to spell it out.
His confidence is also growing and he is doing more and more on his own without getting so frustrated. I remember Sam and I talking about how frustrated our boys were getting when they weren’t able to do something. We got the teacher on board last year to help him deal with this and now while he still does get upset, he is able to work through the process better.
What is really amazing is how is able to start reasoning and putting things together and he is starting to understand how things work. With this comes his never ending list of questions.
Why does the pool go green
What are the blue things in the chlorine
How do carrots make your eyes better
Why is sugar bad for you
Where to spiders live
What do zebra eat
It goes on and on and OOOOOOOONNNNNN.
As parents we get so caught up in every day life with your kids, we often don’t even realise they are changing and growing up. We take for granted that the world is still new for them. Jack and I got into a heated discussion the other day about Opels. I was trying to explain what the logo looked like and kept saying “Its a lightning bolt, like on Flash” but he wasn’t getting it. Eventually he said “MOM! I didn’t learn about lighting bolts yet!”
Maybe it is because it is currently contrasted against Emma’s awful tantrums stage but 5 is really such a great age. They are independent but still need you, they are over the worst of the tantrums and you are able to have some of the best conversations with them.
Those of you with 5 year olds are you enjoying it as much as I am? Which has been your favourite stage so far?

I really enjoyed all my children more from about 4 – but 5 is great! I am not so sure about 12 – although it seems to be better than 11 right now

TWO?? No man Marcia, you clearly have amazing kids. Emma is 2 – it is NOT MY FAVOURITE!
When my daughter was 5 it was an awesome year however with my son who turned 5 last year October I have seen the “other side” of a 5 year old. Yes he is curious and wanting to know things but also tried to stretch the boundaries daily.
5 has been an awesome year with Kade I am loving the way his mind works all the time and the long conversations we are having.
