Saying goodbye to tonsils – all you need to know

We had Jack and Emma’s tonsils out on Friday. Yes we had them taken out on the same day. In the long run I think it was the best decision to have them done on the same day. Sort of like how twins are easier in the long run. You get those newborn days done and dusted at once.

It was an emotionally exhausting day for all of us. I went into theater with both of them which was tough especially since I have my own issues when it comes to hospitals. Emma went in first and she put up a fight, she really is not one to do anything she doesn’t want to. I ended up having to hold her on my lap while a nurse held her feet. I know how horrible that gas is, I remember it clearly when I had it when I was 11. The anesthetist kept telling me she wouldn’t remember anything but I remember having the mask on my face and feeling helpless, so I wasn’t convinced about that. Jack was a lot easier fortunately but did take longer to fall asleep.

Obviously they were angry (Emma) and sore (Jack) when they came out of theater and there was lots of crying and me bed hopping. Once the anesthetic had worn off they were a lot better and by 14h00 we were home. I have put this operation off for many years and almost ignored the fact they were going in. If you are planning of having it done, these are a few of my tips and thoughts.

Having your kids tonsils out|HarassedMom

  • Do it sooner rather than later. Emma has recovered a lot quicker and easier than Jack has. It appears the older you are the worse the pain for some reason.
  • Don’t wear white. There is some bleeding and there may even be some vomitting.
  • Pack some toys/activities for your kids to do while you wait to be taken in.
  • Take a team with you. David and his mom were with us which was the only way we could have managed it. If you only have one kid going take your husband or a friend, do not do it alone.
  • Pack in some of their favourite snacks (if they aren’t on the red list). The hospital will give you some food but it is easier to get a fussy eater to eat stuff they like than stuff they have to. (Emma is one of these and ended up eating the snacks her granny had packed in).
  • Don’t be scared of the meds. We got given two massive bags of meds, use them.
  • Watch for dehydration. Jack particularly struggled to eat or drink anything. Make sure they have bottles or cups of water/coke where they can access them easily and keep reminding them to have at least a sip.

  1. Shew two sets of tonsils on the same day. Only my son has had his tonsils removed. first had to do grommits and adenoids then after we did the tonsils and reaction and yes it wasn’t pleasant there was vomits and when my son woke from the anethestic he was very aggressive (punching and fighting)

  2. You did a lot better than me! When my son got his tonsils and adenoids removed when he was 4, I fainted when he came into the recovery room! I think it was seeing him hooked up to all of those machines that got me. By the end of the day, he was just fine, though. For some reason, my daughter never had to have hers removed. Pretty brave of you to have them both done on the same day! I hope they are feeling much better!

  3. Thanks for sharing your experience and tips! My doctor has recommended having my oldest daughter’s tonsils removed and I’ve been hesitant. This post helps to know what to expect.
