Gluten Free Brownies

I have been gluten free for over 20 years. The biggest thing I still miss is cake and cookies. I love baking and it does suck that I can’t eat most of what I bake. Gluten free flours are still expensive so I can’t bake as often as I like and often the things I am baking don’t come out like I want them too. So I am always hesitant to try out new recipes but these gluten free brownies take 5 minutes to make in the blender and they are so good.

The best part is they have no refined sugar in them, so you can enjoy them guilt free!

They do have dates in them to give you some sweetness and it is more than you need. And dates are good for you!

Benefits of Dates

Dates are a good source of antioxidants. Fresh dates contain anthocyandins and carotenoids and dried dates have polyphenols – so it doesn’t matter how you eat them, they have benefits.

Dates are good for blood sugar balance. Eating dates on their own or with a meal has been shown to help people with type-2 diabetes manage their blood sugar and fat levels. Research has shown that they have a low glycemic impact.

Lower your blood pressure. Five to six dates provide you with around 80 milligrams of magnesium. Magnesium is an essential mineral that helps to dilate blood vessels.

Dates are a brain booster. The average date contains over 2 milligrams of choline. Choline has been associated with better memory and learning, add a few dates to your child’s daily diet.

Maintain bone mass. Dates are jam-packed with potassium which means it can help to protect bone mass. It does this by reducing the amount of calcium that is removed through the kidneys.

Dates are so great to use as an alternative to processed sugar. I have used them in date balls and my aunt used to make a delicious Brandy Tart with dates.

I left these gluten free brownies on the counter to cool down and the kids finished them off in minutes. They are definitely a great snack to make if you are trying to limit the amount of refined sugar your kids are eating.

Gluten-free Brownies

Course Baking


  • 1.5 cups Dates, chopped
  • 1 cup Hot Water
  • 3/4 cups Butter
  • 2 Eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla essence
  • 3/4 cup Cocoa Powder
  • 1/2 cup Gluten-free Flour (plus 2 TBSP)


  • Place the dates and the hot water in the food processor and blend until blended smooth.
  • Add in the rest of the ingredients one by one and blend until smooth and blended well.
  • Pour into a greased square cake tin.
  • Bake at 180C for 25 minutes
