Cons Of Working From Home

I love working from home and wouldn’t have it any other way but it is not always all sunshine and unicorns. Some days I do long for the structure of an office job. There are times I think the stability of a 9-5 would work better for everyone. Cons of working from home|HarassedMom

The cons, for me, of working from home are:

  • I never really leave the office. My office is the dining room that we have converted into an office but our whole downstairs is open plan, so I physically never leave the office. I have to walk through it to get to the lounge/kitchen. The temptation is always there to sit down and check emails.
  • Some days the struggle to motivate myself is real. If you are getting up and going to an office where people are counting on you to be there, the motivation to at least show up is there. Some days I just want to stay in bed, watch TV or both and it is so easy to do just that, even when I shouldn’t. I do a lot of internal pep talks sometimes.
  • I sometimes bore myself. David also works from home but is out and about a lot more than me and sometimes I get sick of my own company. I wouldn’t say I miss daily colleague interactions but every now and then I do miss the buzz and busyness of an office environment.
  • Bouncing ideas off myself often yields the same results. I think this might be what I miss the most, running ideas past colleagues to get a different perspective. I have an online team I can bounce ideas off but it’s not the same.

Some days I really do miss the dynamic of an office – the chatter, the friends, the stolen lunches from the fridge, coffee breaks, office politics etc.  But then I work in my pjs from my bed and no one cares and I no longer miss it!!!

If you work from home, what are some of your cons?

I struggle with the same things as you mama. Often times I feel guilty about working especially if the kids are around. Gotta find that balance.

It is all about the balance. It is like a seesaw – some days you are up and others you are not.

This is so true. I am also working from home and had similar experiences. However, despite all of these cons. I still love it. We might just have to share the message that it’s not for everyone. Working at home is actually a lifestyle.
