Do you (REALLY) need all that stuff?

Stop buying stuff you don't need (or want)| Zero waste living with HarassedMom

Have you ever stopped and looked around your house and noticed all the stuff you own? Do you need all that stuff?

About 3 years ago we were literally drowning in all the stuff in our house. It was suffocating us. We are 6 people living in a 3 bedroom townhouse and while we have enough space, we cluttered it up with so much rubbish.

So I started our journey to declutter and now I ruthless clear out the crap regularly. It has become therapeutic and eye-opening at the same time.

We owned so much stuff that we never used. Some of it we had been given, some we had bought thinking we needed it only to find we didn’t actually. And there as stuff I had no idea where it came from. (Anyone else have this happen or just us?)

It has taken me a while but we now have empty shelves and our drawers are no longer stuffed full of stuff. Everything we do have now has a purpose and gets used.

I have a system for things I want to get rid of now. They get put out of sight and if after a month no one has asked for it or used it, it goes. I even do it with the kids toys. I pack a box of stuff they haven’t played with and put it in the garage, then a month later it gets donated.

Think about – if you don’t use it at least once a month, do you really need it? Obviously this excludes seasonal items like fans or heaters.

I chat a little more about this in my YouTube video.

With Christmas coming up it is now so important to be intentional about the things you are bringing into your home.

Before just mindlessly buying all the stuff that is currently on sale, ask yourself if you really need it. If you are honest with yourself, you will probably find that you don’t actually need it.

Do you need all that stuff you have taking up space in your home?

  1. This is a very good argument and I have been trying to do the same as well. Once you organize your things you will realize you don’t need that much as you expect. Hopefully, more people will pay attention to this.

  2. I can’t say I am a minimalist, nor a maximalist, but I do have lots of stuff at home. Unlike others, my stuff is something with value (either monetarily, or goodwill), both give me some motivation and a good feeling every day. Before I get rid of things, I make sure that I don’t have regrets, nor feelings about the items and that I am ready to move on.
