This was the first year we really explored the sights around Montagu where my parents live. Usually we do one or two activities but this year we packed the outings in.
Everywhere we went was obviously kid friendly but most make for great days out even if you don’t have kids. We spent the first few nights of our holiday in a little resort in Montagu called Rainbow Glen. It is an incredible child-friendly, affordable place to stay. We could open the door and the kids would head out and play with the bunnies, feed the horses, swing, lie on the hammock or swim (the pool is fenced off and can only be accessed by an adult). If you are visiting the area with kids this is a must stay!
Out of all the things we did I think the Berry Farm in Swellendam was the most affordable. It was R45 for the adults and I think R20 for the older kids. We did a tractor ride around the farm, it must have taken around an hour. The owner stops along the way, gets the kids to do activities and allows them to drive up front. There is a walk through the enchanted forest where the kids are allowed to swim in the little river and then finally you can pick the berries. There is a small little coffee shop that makes a killer berry smoothie and has some fishing nets for the kids to try to catch a few fish with. We were there most of the day and the kids all had so much fun. (If you go in summer be sure to take sunscreen.)
We did a boat cruise along the Breede Rivier from Viljoensdrift Wine Farm. It was R400 for all of us (5 adults and 7 kids) and including is wine tasting for the adults before the cruise. It was such a lovely experience. The river is calm and the scenery is beautiful. You can pack a picnic basket from goodies in the deli but I did find the deli food a little expensive but their wine was pretty reasonable.
David and I visited Van Loveren and had a great time doing some wine and food pairing. They also offer pairings for the kids with non-alcoholic juices which I thought was really great, we wanted to take the kids back but never got the time. You can go crazy with the pairings though, there was cheese, chocolate, meat and sweets. There is a restaurant if you do want to have a meal afterwards but it is not really what I would class as kid-friendly in terms of food.
Every year we spend the day at Avalon Springs. It is a great day out with warm and cool pools and slides for the big kids, toddlers and babies. I was a little disappointed that it seemed over priced this year – entrance is R100 for kids over 3! You can spend the entire day there but I still don’t feel it is really worth that price. The out of season prices are reasonable though.
Where did you go that was memorable this holiday?
