45 Years 45 Lessons
I am turning 45 in a few days! FORTY FIVE! That’s a big number – it is half of 90 which is almost 100! It is a lot of years of living and a lot of lessons. I have a kid who is turning 21 years old this year! He is now a whole legal adult!
It still blows my mind!

So what are the 45 lessons I have learnt in the last 45 years?
- Don’t get married to the first person who asks.
- Eat what you want when you want without guilt.
- If you don’t want to study after school, don’t. Live a little, take time to find your “thing”.
- Don’t spend your days in a job you hate. Leave! You will find another job.
- Don’t spend your days in an unhappy relationship. Leave. You will find another partner.
- Save. Even if it is a small amount – SAVE IT!
- Get some indoor plants – even if you still live at home, or are living with friends. If you kill them, get some more.
- Find the right bra. Get measured properly and make sure you buy the right size.
- When you have something to say – say it.
- Never let a man speak over you or talk down to you. When they do, and they will, speak louder.
- Keep a journal or a blog. Write down your story, your journey and your thoughts.
- Learn how to cook. Take out is great, but nothing comes close to a home cooked meal.
- Buy less. You don’t need as much as you think you do. Trust me.
- Research the brands you buy. Find out how they treat the people who work for them and how they treat the environment.
- Friends, even best friends, will come and go. That’s ok. Just don’t shut yourself off from meeting new people.
- Add nutritional yeast to your meals – trust me!
- Buy good coffee. If you can’t afford good coffee, don’t drink coffee.
- Make time for the things you really enjoy doing!
- Get a dog or a cat. Or both.
- Always listen to the little voice in your head – ALWAYS! It is always right.
- Life is hard. It is relentless. It is easier when you find a person (people) to do it with.
- Do yoga! It teaches you how to breathe and this is invaluable. It is also good for your soul.
- Get up early! Starting the morning in the still, calm of the new day is the perfect way to start the day.
- Have kids or don’t but make sure it is your decision.
- Drink enough water.
- Find a good gynaecologist.
- Get enough sleep! Your adrenals will thank you.
- Deal with your traumas!
- Always tell someone where you are going.
- Limit the chemicals you put on your body – use a menstrual cup or period pants. Use natural skin care products. Drink less milk (or no milk).
- Eat less red meat. When you do, make it organic and what not.
- Read the labels of EVERYTHING!
- Don’t believe everything you read or are told. Research and find out what you believe.
- Homeschool your kids. Just do it. It will be easier than dealing with the admin of school.
- Recycle.
- Start a compost heap – you can do it even if you life in a flat.
- Get your nails done.
- Find a good hairdresser who listens to you and knows how to cut your hair.
- Eat vegetables and fruit every day!
- If you want to drink, make sure you are with people (a person) you trust completely.
- Explore your country. Travel is great but you don’t always have to cross borders.
- Don’t buy a car. Yeah I said it. Use public transport or ride share or walk but wait before you buy a car.
- Wash the dishes before you go to bed.
- If you wear makeup, make sure you find the right colour foundation.
- Be you!
