45 Years 45 Lessons | Life after 40 with HarassedMom
I am 45 this year. It is not a big birthday but this year does feel like my mini "midlife" crises year! Not in a negative kind of way, just in a "I am becoming me" kinda way.

45 Years 45 Lessons

I am turning 45 in a few days! FORTY FIVE! That’s a big number – it is half of 90 which is almost 100! It is a lot of years of living and a lot of lessons. I have a kid who is turning 21 years old this year! He is now a whole legal adult!

It still blows my mind!

So what are the 45 lessons I have learnt in the last 45 years?

  1. Don’t get married to the first person who asks.
  2. Eat what you want when you want without guilt.
  3. If you don’t want to study after school, don’t. Live a little, take time to find your “thing”.
  4. Don’t spend your days in a job you hate. Leave! You will find another job.
  5. Don’t spend your days in an unhappy relationship. Leave. You will find another partner.
  6. Save. Even if it is a small amount – SAVE IT!
  7. Get some indoor plants – even if you still live at home, or are living with friends. If you kill them, get some more.
  8. Find the right bra. Get measured properly and make sure you buy the right size.
  9. When you have something to say – say it.
  10. Never let a man speak over you or talk down to you. When they do, and they will, speak louder.
  11. Keep a journal or a blog. Write down your story, your journey and your thoughts.
  12. Learn how to cook. Take out is great, but nothing comes close to a home cooked meal.
  13. Buy less. You don’t need as much as you think you do. Trust me.
  14. Research the brands you buy. Find out how they treat the people who work for them and how they treat the environment.
  15. Friends, even best friends, will come and go. That’s ok. Just don’t shut yourself off from meeting new people.
  16. Add nutritional yeast to your meals – trust me!
  17. Buy good coffee. If you can’t afford good coffee, don’t drink coffee.
  18. Make time for the things you really enjoy doing!
  19. Get a dog or a cat. Or both.
  20. Always listen to the little voice in your head – ALWAYS! It is always right.
  21. Life is hard. It is relentless. It is easier when you find a person (people) to do it with.
  22. Do yoga! It teaches you how to breathe and this is invaluable. It is also good for your soul.
  23. Get up early! Starting the morning in the still, calm of the new day is the perfect way to start the day.
  24. Have kids or don’t but make sure it is your decision.
  25. Drink enough water.
  26. Find a good gynaecologist.
  27. Get enough sleep! Your adrenals will thank you.
  28. Deal with your traumas!
  29. Always tell someone where you are going.
  30. Limit the chemicals you put on your body – use a menstrual cup or period pants. Use natural skin care products. Drink less milk (or no milk).
  31. Eat less red meat. When you do, make it organic and what not.
  32. Read the labels of EVERYTHING!
  33. Don’t believe everything you read or are told. Research and find out what you believe.
  34. Homeschool your kids. Just do it. It will be easier than dealing with the admin of school.
  35. Recycle.
  36. Start a compost heap – you can do it even if you life in a flat.
  37. Get your nails done.
  38. Find a good hairdresser who listens to you and knows how to cut your hair.
  39. Eat vegetables and fruit every day!
  40. If you want to drink, make sure you are with people (a person) you trust completely.
  41. Explore your country. Travel is great but you don’t always have to cross borders.
  42. Don’t buy a car. Yeah I said it. Use public transport or ride share or walk but wait before you buy a car.
  43. Wash the dishes before you go to bed.
  44. If you wear makeup, make sure you find the right colour foundation.
  45. Be you!
