I am finding the older I get the more I am scared of.

What are you scared of?

The prompt for Day 11 of #Blogtober is “What are you scared of”.

I will admit that this list seems to grow longer the older I get. I used to love flying, I have flown in some small planes without issue but flying now terrifies me. I still do it obviously but with the help of Rescue and lots of deep breathing.

I am also scared of thunderstorms. I love them. There is nothing like a summer storm in Pretoria but they scare me. I am not 100% sure what it is – the sound, the lightning – it just all scares me and has done so for as long as I can remember. I just hide it a little better now that I have kids.

Snakes! I am scared of snakes. I can’t even watch them on TV and even images of them freak me out. I have had to face this fear now that we homeschool because Jack loves reptiles but they still cause me huge anxiety. When I was a lot younger and working in a game lodge – I came face to face with a black mamba one night. It was about 20 years ago but I still fear that fear every time I think about it.

I am 44 years old and still scared of the dark! It is not as bad as it used to be – I had to fake it a lot with the kids so I did eventually make it. But I will not walk outside in the dark on my own and I never have our home completely dark. (Loadshedding is not particularly fun for me for this reason).

I am not sure if this counts as something I am scared of or an irrational fear but I can’t drive on the highway in front of a large truck. I am always convinced its going to smash into us. I have never seen this happen. I don’t know anyone who has ever seen this happen but I am still terrified of it happening.

My final irrational fear is that my car will explode at a petrol station. Again this has never happened to anyone I know but I hold my breathe EVERY time I put petrol in – EVERY TIME. Silly, right?

  1. Great post. These are scary things! My partner cannot understand my fear of the dark and I can’t understand why someone would not be scared of the dark! 😉 It’s the unknown. They are thinking of load-shedding in the UK now too. I always feel like the lorry behind me won’t be able to stop. 🙁 Like you, I am able to hid my fears more now for my kids, although they’re still the ones that get the spiders for me lol xxx

  2. I used to work in a petrol station, I guess you soon get over any fear of explosions, even though you know they happen. I love snakes though, but I’m not sure how I’d feel if I met one in the wild.
