Get creative with your kids using items from your kitchen.

Getting creative with your kids doesn’t have to cost you and arm and a leg and you do’t even need to have a big craft box filled with all sorts of things. In fact you have a host of things in your kitchen that you can use to create some fun crafts and experiments with your kids.

We have had the most fun using simple items I have in the kitchen. Using items from the kitchen is also a great way to incorporate different sensory items into your child’s play.

Food colouring. We use food colouring weekly. It is such a great way to add some colour to art projects. It is also a fun way to show kids how colours change when you mix two colours together. We recently added it to salt dough.

Vinegar and bicarb. These are my favourite to ingredients. Vinegar and bicard added together make for fun little explosions. We do this experiment often and you can add some food colouring to make it a little more fun. Bicarb is also great to use in bath bombs.

Rice and pasta. If you add food colouring to these two things, you have great sensory play idea. I have a box of coloured rice and the kids love it. They full up cups, strain it through the colander. You can also use it to teach shapes and letters. If you have macaroni pasta, you can stick it onto a piece of cardboard and get your kids to thread string through it. We made these fun pictures using pasta and other dry goods from the kitchen.

Flour. I am seriously considering buying those big bags of flour that you get at Makro because we are going through so much of it. I am baking a lot more now but we also use flour a lot to make salt dough, cloud dough and just to let the kids play with it. You can add a little food colouring and get the kids to draw letters in it.

Maizena. Have you guys seen ooblek? It is the coolest thing to show the kids the different forms of matter. You can also use Maizena to do some cool fingerprint activities.

Potatoes. Cut them in half, cut some shapes and you have some stamps!

These are just a few of the items we have used but there are still so many more we want to try out. These are really great for quick and easy activities when you need to buy yourself some time.

What fun things have you made using items from your kitchen?

  1. These are fun ideas, and I love that they don’t cost a lot either. I remember using dried beans for projects with my kids and they had a blast!
