The Best of Pretoria
I have lived in Pretoria my whole adult life, apart from a short, misguided stint in Joburg. While I am yearning to move out of the city, if I have to live in a city then I can’t image it being anywhere else.
Over the last 20 years I have found some amazing places, shops and other hidden gems.
Best place for remote working : Pltform in Moreleta. It has solid wifi, good coffee, amazing food and a stunning setting. It can get pretty busy but if you sit outside you won’t even notice.
Best place for date night : Raya in Hazelwood. Trust me on this one. My neighbour suggested we try this restaurant and it was the best place we have been too (and we have tried out a lot of restaurants over the years). It is not cheap but so worth it.
Best coffee : Khavi Coffee. You will find them in a container along Lynwood Road. I have tried a lot of coffee over the years and theirs wins hands down!
Best sourdough bread : Blos Bakery. I am gluten free but can handle their sourdough bread every once in a while. They bake it fresh and have a few different types – their Feta and Peppadew Sourdough bread is my favourite.
Best yoga studio : Shiva Yoga Studio on Lynwood Road. I have done yoga at gym, tried it at home and have now found peace at this studio. It is calm, peaceful and exactly what yoga should be.
Best fresh fruit and veggies : Vula next to the Blue Crane restaurant. They don’t only sell fruit and veg but you can also get your dairy, meat and much more from them. They do deliver or you can pop in and pick what you want.
Best fresh and frozen berries and nuts : We discovered Madz about a year ago and she we can’t do without her now. We get all of our blueberries, cherries and nuts from her on a weekly basis.
Best grocery retail store : When I do have to go get groceries from a store, I go out of my way to Checkers Castle Gate. It is one of their new stores, it improves my shopping experience! But generally we get the bulk of our groceries from Checkers.
Best second hand store : Sun Gardens Hospice. If you are looking for general second stuff, this is the place to go. It has so much stuff from furniture to appliances to books.
Best second hand clothing store : The Charity Shop in Waterglen Centre has a great selection of quality second hand clothes. They don’t only have clothes, you will find a few other second hand items, all reasonably priced.
Best place to take your dog : Paws in the East. We love taking Kobe here. There is an entrance fee but worth it. Your dogs can run off leash while you enjoy a plate of chips or browse the little gift shop.
Best kid-friendly restaurant : I am not sure if this place is technically in Pretoria but Hyto Tyto is the best kid friendly restaurant. There is an entrance fee but you can spend the whole day there. You won’t even see your kids once you get there.
Best hairdresser : Jolie Cerise. I have fine hair that is a mission to cut and not everyone gets it right but I have been going to Jolie Cerise for almost two years now – not only are they affordable but they get it right every time.
Best nail salon : Jolie Cerise. I have only recently started getting my nails done regularly and that is largely because Lindi is so affordable and does such a great job. Her pedicures are a whole experience!
