Introducing The Refillery

I learnt about the Refillery earlier this year and I was so excited when I found out about this awesome, waste-free store!

Due to lockdown it took me ages to get to to see the actual store but I now order all my spices, some team and our shampoo bars from The Refillery online. I absolutely LOVE this store and can not wait for them to expand and grow to Pretoria!

Find out how and why the Refillery came into being!

Brand Name: THE REFILLERY

Do you have a retail store, an online store or both? (If your products are available in other stores, please add those as well).

We have two beautiful brick and mortar stores – one in Cedar Square Shopping Centre and the other in Morningside Shopping Centre and planning on growing too. We also have an online store to go with our stores as well where all goods are delivered in recycled brown paper bags or customers can purchase glass jars with their products as well.

What products do you offer?

We sell a range of all dry goods from herbs & spices, beans & pulses, grains, rices, seeds and nuts, dried fruit, sweets and snack [a huge hit] flours, tea, coffee, condiments as well as cleaning products on tap, toiletries on tap or naked [no packaging] and a gorgeous range of Zero-Waste Lifestyle products that make your plastic-free journey a little bit easier.

What made you start this business?

Dom and I travelled the world by sea for work and seeing the planet like that gives you a new perspective on things. We would see huge mass’es floating in the sea in the middle of nowhere of plastic and rubbish. We would venture to uninhabited islands around the world but yet they were still covered in rubbish. This was a huge contributing factor for them when starting The Refillery.

Once we had kids it felt like that was a turning point, we wanted our kids to have the same opportunities to travel the world and see all the amazing places we saw; but if something isn’t done about single use plastics then there wont be much to see. We kept saying “Someone will do something” but eventually we realised that we actually had to do something – something big.

How do you choose the brands you work with?

We choose local over imported and we strive to support small businesses as much as possible and help each other grow through our learned experiences. We still feel new to this game so it’s a constant learning curve. We currently have 53 small businesses that supply us.

What does sustainability mean to you?

Its about ‘trying to do better’. I don’t think the idea of being perfectly sustainable is nowhere near possible but the point is to try, use what you need, reuse, reduce, recycle, repurpose it and spread the love. Everyone is at their own stage of their journey and its important to encourage people.

What do you feel is the biggest misconception out there when it comes to sustainable living?

I think that people assume too expensive – which is not the case at all. We work very hard to stay price competitive. Yes some products are more pricey but they are designed to last forever and therefore it’s a one off purchase. Buying in quantities you need saves you a huge amount of money and you are left with a pantry of staples that is used constantly and not money sitting in your pantry waiting for you to try some new recipes.

What tip/s would you give to someone just starting out on their waste-free journey?

Its YOUR journey, start slow with the things you can manage and those you can maintain. Add more when you and if you can. Every little bit counts. You don’t have to do it all, Great if you can but trying to live a more ‘waste-free’ life is exactly what the world needs

What has been the most challenging part about living a zero-waste life?

Finding and sourcing products will always be a constant work-in-progress. I have two small kids, I like to think our choices will be their “normal” and they know we are trying and that’s the main point.

What are 3 of your favourite products within your range?

Im a huge fan of our beeswax wraps, they are hand painted by a friend and I use htem daily. Its been my first swap a few years ago and im still in love.

Our Conditioner bars from Earth Warrior are my best!!! I love how they make my hair feel, they last forever and I use them daily as a shaving bar as well. It’s the best product ever/

Our sweets section – I mean, healthy sweets…need I say more!
