When technology fails – you write a letter.

When technology fails, you write a letter. harassedmom.co.za

My laptop has been showing signs of old age recently. It is slow, it keeps freezing and some days, like today, it actually just refuses to do anything other than display that blue circle indicating it is thinking about something, some where!

I sat down at 8h45 to write a blog post on BlogShareConnect – I published it at 10h45. Not because it was hard to write but because it froze about 6 times while I tried to create the images, add the images or just actually type. Eventually I shut down, threw my pen at the screen, made some coffee and wrote a letter!

My friend Suzanne recently moved to Dubai, her husband was out recently and bought with him a bag of goodies for me. It was such a lovely treat. I rarely get something purely for me, for no good reason. There was some gluten free goodies, some Hello Kitty toilet paper, green tea and a birthday gift for me for next month.

There was also a hand written letter from her, not just a “Hope you enjoy these” note but a proper letter about what’s going on with her life. Isn’t that so cool?

So since I could do nothing on my laptop I decided it was the perfect opportunity to write her a letter back! I wrote and wrote – before I realised I was on page 4 (and still my laptop was in indecision mode). It was actually really great to actually take a pen and some paper and write to someone. I think I need to do it more to be honest! We rely so much on technology these days but it is still nice to know, in the absence of technology it is still possible to keep in touch with friends.

When last did you receive a hand written letter? Do you write letters?

  1. I send out snail mail monthly to a list of friends, I never get anything back but the act of sitting down and writing to them, even if it’s just a recipe I tried that’s awesome, is comforting. takeing away the impersonal aspect of a computer. I have a crappy handwriting though but i still enjoy it.

  2. My half sister and I used to write letters to each other as teenagers. Our mom’s used to work together and we used them to get the letters to each other. We called it “Mommy Mail”.

I’d write a letter, my mom would give it to my sister’s mom the next morning, and the following evening I’d get one back 🙂 I still have all the letters, and that’s nearly 20 years ago!

  3. So true, I’ve come to realize that my handwriting is too slow for my thoughts! This makes me very impatient and it shows in my handwriting – good luck to the person who can decipher my notes and letters 🙂

  4. Shoo! I have been thinking recently about the days not so long ago (OK, fifteen years but still within this millennium) when I would write a letter. No. That’s not true…I would type a letter in Word, print it and post it. It’s so nice to have a tangible, real piece of authentic, personal communication from someone you love.

    1. It really is Dave. Something to keep and for generations to still have access too. How much will an email in your inbox mean to a grandchild compared to a hand written letter in the memory box.

    1. Ursula – I have personally never not had anything undelivered – I have had stuff delayed but I have always received and those I have sent it to have always received too so I do have faith 🙂

  5. You know I love sending (and receiving) letters. It’s literally my love language. This year I’m sending out 52 pieces of mail. I think we’ve done 12 so far. I still have to do a batch for March.

I don’t really get any back though except from my one friend Mandy in Kentucky – she sends me cards and her girls send my kids cards and flat things too.

  6. i remember as a teen always loved writing letters to friends, haven’t received a letter a in who knows how long, i also used to collect pretty writing paper, maybe its time to start sending out letters since it so rare

  7. I love writing and receiving letters and really miss them! We used to write them to each other as kids and I remember letters from my Granny used to arrive at our post box and generate much excitement as there was often a R10 stuffed between some tissues in between the paper. Letter writing is a bit of a lost art.
