Back to school, what I know for sure

We have been doing back to school for about 12 years, the novelty has kind of warn off now and we know the drill, we stopped buying the stationery list from the school for Cameron a few years ago, they don’t use half the stuff and no one checks and half way through the year your child will always ask for more glue.Back to school|HarassedMom
These are things you learn as you go though and we are adjusting to how things get done at high school now but these are a few of the things I know for sure about the first few weeks of back to school.

  • Despite checking and rechecking stationery lists, the teachers WILL send you a list of stuff you still need.
  • If your child isn’t Grade 1, then extra mural’s will start in the first week. If they are in high school, they may very start the first day back.
  • Drop your kids early or late on the first day. New parents will take the better part of the year figuring out how the flow of traffic works in the school parking lot, avoid them as much as you can.
  • Don’t try to form a friendship with the teacher in the first week. She is too distracted and there is too much going on. Wait until a little later in the term, chances are if you try to leave too much of an impression in the first week the teacher won’t remember.
  • You can cover a mountain of books while you are on your Christmas break, there will be a book (or 5) that will be sent home to cover.
  • Don’t buy your child’s uniform too early in the year, particularly the shoes. You may find yourself having to send your child to their first day of school with shoes that are too tight.
  • Drop and go. If your child is in Grade 1, take a few photos and then leave. The quicker the teacher has a chance to get her routine in place, the better.
  • Double check the time that school will end.

What grades are your kids going to this year? Are you ready?

  1. Cant believe school is starting in 2 days. I generally do the back to school waltons box orders (before placing the order though I do check to see what I can leave off the list) It also irritates me that the school generally ask for all the stationery to be sent to school on the first day of school -seriously I do think my daughter is responsible enough to know that she will need a new pen/pencil why should I have to send the whole box of pencils on the first day. We starting Grade 5 and Grade R this year.

  2. It feels like the school holidays had only just begun and now they are already over – it was a short break this year.
I am looking forward to the kids going back though and getting some form of routine back into our household.
I have kids in grade 5 and grade 7 this year.

  3. I can’t believe school starts in 2 days! Everything is ready and waiting for Mr W to attend his first day in grade 1. He is super excited while his mom just wants to burst into tears at the thought. I am warning everyone to avoid me on the 11th because its going to be “snot en trane.” My girly is in grade 4 and seems very relaxed about the new school year!

  4. As an Upholder, I cringe at the ignore the stationery lists 🙂 I know they definitely won’t use all that stuff (an experienced school mom at the school told me her daughter is on year 3 of the same pencils from the first year) but still 🙂

WHAT? you mean no photos at the gate? (I joke – photos will happen at home!)
