10 Ways To Be Happy When You Don’t Wan’t To Be

How to be happy when you don't want to be |HarassedMom

Yesterday was such a meh day. I am not sure why, nothing really happened and I was super super productive but emotionally I was a little all over the place and just felt meh. My joints are in a lot of pain at the moment and I really don’t know why so I am doing some Yoga with Adrienne to stretch everything out a little bit.

Keeping in line with #HappinessHappensMonth, even though yesterday was a little bit of a downer and I really just didn’t want to be happy, it is important (I think) not to get lost in the rabbit hole of negativity. And it is so easy to wallow in those negative “woe is me” thoughts, right?

So what can you do? There is a lot you can do but these are some of the things that work for me.How to be happy when you don't want to be |HarassedMom

Get up! Show up! On those days where everything seems doom and gloom it is easy to just hide out from the world. Stay in bed, ignore calls and literally crawl into the rabbit hole. Unfortunately this is going to change nothing so you have to get up! Get dressed and show up. We often assume that while we are lying in bed, wallowing in our own self-pity the happiness fairy will wave her wand and make us happy. It doesn’t work like that, you have to show up!

Listen to some affirmations. I start and end every day with various affirmations. Yeah I know it does sound a little woo woo but it works! If affirmations really aren’t you vibe find a happy song or two and blast those really loud and sing along.

Exercise! Yeah yeah I know. If you aren’t feeling like getting out of bed you probably aren’t feeling like running 20km right? But it works, getting those endorphins flowing and your heart rate up will definitely help you to your mood up. You don’t have to run, you can do whatever works for you, even a yoga session will help.

Focus on the good things right now. Stop what you are doing and physically write down 3 HAPPY things in your life right now. Then think of three more. Then visit an Instagram feed,  YouTube channel or any place that makes you smile. Every time those negative thoughts pop back in, revert back to your list of three things! You might need to do this a few times, depending on how far down the rabbit hole you are :-p Even on those days where it is complete doom and gloom, I promise you there are 3 happy things, find them!

Bake a cake.

Do something for you. This doesn’t have to be something big like a day at the spa, it can be something as simple as a getting a coffee from your favorite coffee shop or taking an extra long bath. My favorite thing to do is grab a coffee on my way to do the school run, it always adds a little happiness to my day.

Chill out and don’t sweat the small stuff. There is that saying don’t stress about what you can’t change. For those of us with anxiety this is incredibly hard to do because often it is the small stuff that sets us off. I am trying to let go of a lot of stuff that I can’t do anything about and if I can change, then I focus on that. So try not to let the small stuff become big stuff. When I was working with my life coach, she said when you worry about something, like money, you actually end up blocking it. I have tested this theory and it really does work. How to be happy when you don't want to be |HarassedMom

Meet your bestie for lunch.

And finally if it is really bad, if the rabbit hole seems like the only option, take a mental health day! BUT only a day. When the day is done, you have to get up, show up and make it happen! One of my friends left a comment on my Facebook post about my meh feelings that said “don’t unpack there” and she is so right. You can be down, you can be sad, you can be woe is me but it can’t become your default.

I would love to hear some of the ways you stay happy when you don’t want to.
